Chandigarh: Two unidentified gunmen today killed Shaurya Chakra winner, 62-year-old Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind, in his native village Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran district. The assailants reportedly shot him five times when he opened the gate of his school to come out. While the killers escaped, Balwinder succumbed to his bullet wounds while being taken to the hospital.
Balwinder had fought terrorists and had come out unscathed of many attacks on him in the 1980s when terrorism was at its peak in the state. Confronting frequent terrorist ire, he had even trained his wife, children and other family to use the weapons when under attack. He lived in a well fortified house in the village.
Balwinder had inspired many to take up arms in self defence when terrorism was rampant in the state.
