New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) today inked a Rs 2,960 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) to the Indian Navy.
The Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile is a supersonic missile characterized by its rapid response and quick-launch capabilities, designed to counteract aerial threats posed by missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, and helicopters. This missile system is employed by the Army, Navy, and Air Force in various configurations.
The MRSAM system is a standard fit, onboard multiple Indian Naval Ships and is planned to be fitted on the majority of the future platforms, which are planned for acquisition.
“The contract marks a critical milestone in the ongoing efforts to bolster India’s defence capabilities and indigenise advanced military technology,” the Ministry of Defence stated.
With the emphasis on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, the missiles would be supplied by BDL under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category with largely indigenous content. The contract would generate employment of approximately 3.5 lakh man-days in the defence industry, including various MSMEs, the Ministry added.
The contract was signed by the officials of the Ministry of Defence and Bharat Dynamics Limited in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
