Yangon/New York: A rapid increase in the number of recorded COVID-19 cases in strife-torn Myanmar is causing grave concern, United Nations officials working on the ground in country, which is facing violent protests since the military junta usurped power in a coup on February 1, 2021, have said.

Expressing concerns about the surge in Corona cases, they said that, on July 4, the test positivity rate reached 22.3 per cent, compared to around 10 per cent just two weeks ago in the country. In addition, several COVID-19 variants have been detected, including the Delta variant.
The UN team warned that a major outbreak of COVID-19 would have devastating consequences on both people’s health and on the economy.
According to a Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General in New York, the team members on the ground in Myanmar had stressed the importance of resuming the delivery of essential health services, implementing measures to prevent the spread of the virus and to scale up vaccinations. For this to happen, the UN team said that health facilities must be kept safe and patients, health workers and other service providers must be protected.
Latest WHO figures updated till July 7, 2021, showed that while the total cumulative COVD-19 cases in Myanmar stood at 175923, in the 24 hour period there were 3947 new cases reported. the total cumulative deaths stood at 3,570, 57 new deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours.
