Pune: Five persons were charred to death at a fire that broke out in COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India’s facility here today. The company said there was no impact on the Covishield vaccine making process.
According to the fire brigade, the fire broke out at 2.45 pm on the fourth and fifth floor of the SEZ3 building in the company’s premise. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said contractor’s men were working on the floor where the fire broke out.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in a fire at Serum Institute Pune. In a tweet, he said “Anguished by the loss of lives due to an unfortunate fire at the @SerumInstIndia. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest.”
