Biennial elections for Graduates’ and Teachers’ seats of Bihar Legislative Council on October 22

Bye-election to the Telangana Legislative Council from Nizamabad Local Authorities’ constituency on October 9

New Delhi: Biennial elections to  the Bihar Legislative Council from four Graduates’ and four Teachers’ Constituencies will be held on October 22, the Election Commission announced here today. The notification would be issued on September 28, and the last day of filing nominations would be October 5, 2020.

Moreover, bye-election to the Telangana Legislative Council from Nizamabad Local Authorities’ constituency to fill the vacancy caused due to disqualification of the sitting member Shri R. Bhoopathi Reddy, which was notified by the Election Commission on March 12, 2020 will be held between 9 am and 5 pm on  October 9, 2020 . The counting of vote will be held on October 12, and result has to be declared by October 14, 2020.

In Bihar, meanwhile, the Graduates’ Constituencies are Patna Graduates’, Darbhanga Graduates’, Tirhut Graduates’, and Kosi Graduates’. The Teachers’ Constituencies are  Patna Teachers’,  Darbhanga Teachers’, Tirhut Teachers’ and Saran Teachers’.

The term of office of eight members of the Bihar Legislative Council from Graduates’ and Teachers’ Constituencies had fallen vacant on May 6, 2020, due to the retirement of the sitting members. However, public health emergency due to COVID-19 and the guidelines and orders passed under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 by the competent authority, the Election Commission on April 3, 2020 had passed an order under Article 324 of Constitution of India read with section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,  and directed that the process of election to the abovementioned seats be initiated at a later date after reviewing the prevailing situation.

The Model Code of Conduct concerning these elections will come into force with immediate effect in the concerned Constituencies.
