New Delhi: The voter turnout was 61.11% as of 11:30 pm today for phase-1 of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India stated.
It claimed that polling across 24 Assembly Constituencies in the 7 districts of the Union Territory in Phase -1 was incident-free and peaceful.
Polling was held across 3276 polling stations established in 24 Assembly Constituencies spanning 7 districts namely, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Kishtwar, Anantnag, Ramban and Doda.
Kashmiri migrant voters were also empowered to exercise their franchise through 24 Special Polling Stations setup in Jammu (19), Udhampur(1) and Delhi (4). Earlier, the Commission had eased the process for Kashmiri migrant voters by abolishing the cumbersome Form-M and enabling self-certification.
Many voters aged above 85 years and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) with 40% benchmark disability opted to vote from the comfort of their homes.
In each of the 7 Districts where voting was held today, the voting participation exceeded the participation during the Lok Sabha 2024 elections.
“The performance builds on the trend witnessed during the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir which saw a voter turnout of 58.58% at polling stations, the highest in the last 35 years,” the Commission said.
A total of 219 candidates are in the electoral fray in the first phase of which 9 are women candidates.
The voter turnout will further be updated by the field-level officers once the remaining polling parties return from the polling stations. The updated figures will be available Assembly Constituency-wise and district-wise live at the Voter Turnout App.
The district-wise approximate voter turnout at 11:30 pm is as below:
District-Wise Approximate Voter Turnout in Phase – 1 (11:30 PM)
Data displayed is as per the information being filled in the systems by the field officer, the Commission said.
“This is an approximate trend, as data from some polling stations (PS) takes time and this trend does not include Postal Ballot. A final actual account of votes recorded for each PS is shared in Form 17 C with Polling agents at close of polls,” it added.
Polling for the second and third phase will be held on September 25 and October 1, 2024 respectively. Counting of votes is scheduled on October 8, 2024.
