New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind conferred National Awards on 47 teachers from across the country in the first ever award ceremony held virtually today (September 5, 2020) on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
The President in his speech congratulated the winners of the award and appreciated the steps taken by the teachers in order to improve school education qualitatively. He observed that about 40 percent of the winners of the National Awards were women and appreciated the role women have played as educators.
The awards were finalised by an independent national level jury constituted by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education.

Sangeeta Sohni from Mumbai and Narayan Chandrakant Mangalaram from Ahmednagar have also been awarded for their unique contribution towards the field of education.
Sohni, teacher at the Atomic Energy Central School, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai received the award for her inspirational work, according to the citation by the National Jury. The citation says: “Ms Sohni has made noteworthy contributions to the effective teaching of Chemistry by introducing tools and methodologies to enable students to understand its diverse concepts in an accessible and easy manner. She has adopted the use of fun-filled practical exercises, applicative uses and ICT tools for the purpose. At the same time, she has also brought in academic rigour that has motivated her students to achieve very good academic results in higher secondary.”
According to the National Jury citation, Mangalaram, teacher at Zhilla Parishad Primary School, Rahuri, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra received the award for being an extremely progressive educator who created a model primary school. “In a rural school, where children of nomadic tribes come to study, he has effectively implemented art integrated learning and other innovative pedagogies which has helped retention and increased daily attendance. Mr. Mangalaram has also been able to mobilize the community and bring in a donation that has led to better infrastructure in the school.”
Paying obeisance and tributes to Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, President Kovind said that he was a visionary, statesman and most significantly an extraordinary teacher. Celebrating his birthday as Teachers’ Day is a mere token for the services he had rendered towards the development of the nation and also a mark of respect for the entire community of educators, he added.
Meanwhile, paying tribute to teachers, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that he owed his attainment and accomplishments in life to his teachers and mentors, who coached and trained him during his school and college days. Quoting India’s mantra, ‘Acharya Devo Bhava’, the Vice President said that teachers are manifestations of the divine because she or he ‘creates’ a well-rounded personality and fosters innovation; ‘preserves’ the best thoughts and ideas and transmits ideals and values across generations; ‘dispels’ doubts and clarifies concepts and nurtures excellence.
